Beholding beauty in the presence of lonesome comfort enabled me to cherish this moment, not at the right of a stranger’s diversion, but to my own delight.
February's corpse has endured the spring shift
in the midst of Lily’s bells and encroaching
hydrangea shrubs.
The day of bliss has outlived spring's eccentric
approach, there is now an inkling of blossoms
atop the Red Maple’s bulky crown.
My eyes have not deceived any prevailing senses
since the wake of my former mentor
and his own pleasure towards nature’s splendor.
Glory casts a set of no holds barred for loose soil
and unthawed Cosmos stalks, welcoming
weeds and transpiring cattail reeds.
His words rang true to the demotion of frost: let us return
to the serendipity of bristling leaves and flakey bumblebees
for there came no denial to his favoring of spring,
still he preferred the likelihood of its arrival
once more before he saw a greater light —
a neurotic dusk, the panoramic screening
which befalls upon that greater light he worshiped
as the days grew longer than the horse’s cheek.
If only he were able to witness the scene of cladded grass
enveloped in picnic sheets, as others around are swept away —
entrapped in the beady glare of sun while gales of laughter traveled
among the gentle gusts of air in content.
Beholding beauty in the presence of lonesome
comfort enabled me to cherish this moment,
not at the right of a stranger’s diversion,
but to my own delight.
In memory of the man
who taught me flowers too can perish overnight,
try as we might to avoid slipping into indifference
we must soak in that sadness in order to recognize
the immortality of nature: not everything is legacy.
Longevity may easily last
until spring’s revival eventually fades
to false fruition.
